12 String Meditiation for Jack Rose

Link
"Appearing as part of VDSQ’s ‘Solo Acoustic’ series, this latest from Sonic Youth main-man Thurston Moore is notable not just because it’s ‘unplugged’, but also due to the fact that it pays tribute to Moore’s friend Jack Rose. Rose’s chosen discipline was the 12 string guitar, so it seems fitting that Moore should gravitate towards that hallowed instrument for a dedication. The music itself is tempered and melancholy but has enough of Moore’s distinctive playing style in there to drag SY fans in from the cold. Even when playing without a pedal board and large (occasionally faulty) amps, Moore’s patented grit shines through above all else. Hitting the strings with a studied punkishness just about makes up for the lack of electrical accompaniment and I am left struggling to think of a better tribute to Rose’s legacy. Even though Moore might be using the 12 string guitar, at no point does ’12 String Meditations…’ ever sound like he's attempting to replicate Rose’s style, rather this is a Moore album through and through, and as sincere and as heartfelt as they come."-Boomkat
Enjoy!
